Why September Is the Perfect Time to Reset Your Skin

Why September Is the Perfect Time to Reset Your Skin

Summer is wonderful for holidays, long evenings and spending more time outdoors, but by the time September arrives, your skin might be ready for a little attention too.

After months of sunshine, SPF, warmer temperatures, swimming, travelling and perhaps a few more late nights than usual, you may notice that your skin doesn't feel quite like it did at the beginning of summer.

It might feel drier or more dehydrated. Pigmentation may suddenly look more noticeable. Your complexion might appear dull, congested or uneven, and skincare products that worked perfectly a few months ago may no longer seem to be doing the same job.

That's why I think September is the perfect month for a skin reset.

Your Skin Changes With the Seasons

Just as we swap sandals for boots and start reaching for an extra layer, our skin's needs can change as we move into autumn.

Cooler temperatures, less humidity and eventually central heating can all contribute to moisture loss. At the same time, we're beginning to see the effects of everything our skin has experienced over the summer.

This doesn't mean you need to completely overhaul your skincare cupboard or start using ten different products.

Quite often, the opposite is true.

September is a great opportunity to strip things back, assess what your skin actually needs and create a simple routine that supports it going into autumn and winter.

Has Summer Left Your Skin Dehydrated?

One of the biggest things I notice after summer is dehydration.

Sunshine, flights, air conditioning, chlorine and salt water can all leave skin feeling tight, rough or less plump than usual.

And remember, dry and dehydrated skin aren't necessarily the same thing. Even oily or combination skin can be dehydrated.

You might notice your makeup isn't sitting as nicely, fine lines seem more obvious or your complexion simply looks a little tired.

Rather than immediately reaching for stronger exfoliants, September can be a good time to concentrate on restoring hydration and supporting your skin barrier.

Suddenly Noticing More Pigmentation?

You might also come back from your summer holiday and notice freckles, dark patches or areas of uneven pigmentation looking more prominent.

UV exposure can stimulate melanin production, which is why pigmentation can become much more noticeable following the summer months.

This is also why daily SPF shouldn't disappear just because summer has ended. UV exposure happens throughout the year, including on cloudy autumn days.

If pigmentation is bothering you, autumn can be a good time to have your skin professionally assessed and start discussing an appropriate skincare and treatment plan.

The important thing is understanding what you're treating first rather than simply buying a product labelled "brightening".

Time to Look at Your Home Skincare Routine

September has that lovely "back to school" feeling, even when you're well past school age!

Routines return, diaries become a little more organised and it feels like a natural time for a fresh start. So take a look at what's sitting in your bathroom.

? Are you actually using everything?
? Are you layering lots of active ingredients because social media told you to?
? Is your skin feeling irritated, tight or sensitive?
? Have you been using exactly the same routine for years even though your skin has changed?

Your skincare doesn't need to be complicated to be effective.

I'm a big believer in choosing the right products for your skin rather than simply using more products.

At Surrey Sanctuary, I work with Medik8 and particularly love their straightforward CSA philosophy, Vitamin C and sunscreen by day, Vitamin A by night, with other products added where your individual skin needs them.

September Is Also a Great Time to Reassess Your Treatments

Your skin reset doesn't necessarily mean booking every treatment available.

Sometimes your skin needs hydration. Sometimes it needs exfoliation. Sometimes we're looking at pigmentation, texture or loss of firmness. And sometimes the best thing we can do is calm everything down and concentrate on repairing the skin barrier.

Depending on what I see during your consultation, we might discuss a professional facial, a Medik8 peel, microneedling, skin boosters or simply making a few changes to your home skincare.

That's why I prefer to treat the skin in front of me rather than follow a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

What About Microneedling and Peels?

As we move away from peak summer and prolonged sun exposure, many clients start thinking again about treatments such as microneedling and professional chemical peels.

Microneedling can be used to support collagen production and improve concerns including skin texture and the appearance of fine lines or certain types of scarring.

Professional peels can be selected according to your skin and concerns. For example, the Medik8 Universal AHA Peel can be used when we're looking to brighten and smooth the complexion, while the Sensitive PHA Peel offers a gentler approach for suitable sensitive or reactive skin.

These treatments still require appropriate sun protection and aren't automatically right for everyone simply because it's autumn, which is why consultation and correct aftercare are so important.

Don't Forget Your Neck

While you're resetting your routine, take your skincare a little further down.

The neck is one of the areas we often neglect, yet it's regularly exposed to the same environmental factors as our face.

Bring your cleanser, serums, moisturiser and SPF down onto your neck and décolletage where appropriate rather than stopping at your jawline.

If changes in skin texture or firmness around the neck and jawline are already concerning you, we can also discuss professional treatment options as part of your consultation.

Your September Skin Reset Doesn't Need to Be Complicated

If your skin isn't looking or feeling its best after summer, don't panic and don't throw everything at it at once.

Think of September as an opportunity to reset:

Rehydrate. Reassess. Protect. Treat what your skin actually needs.

A few carefully chosen changes can often make far more sense than an overflowing bathroom shelf.

And if you're not sure where to begin, that's exactly what a professional skin consultation is for.

At Surrey Sanctuary Skin & Beauty in Dorking, I will look at how your skin is behaving now, talk about what's bothering you and create a realistic plan for the months ahead.
